“Whatever you are advocating, be positive.”

That’s the implication in an Ipsos Reid poll for CanWest/Global News:

  • Nine in 10 Canadians (88%) are optimistic (“very” or “somewhat”) that 2007 will be a good year for them “personally.”
  • Nine in 10 (88%) are optimistic that 2007 will be a good year for their family
  • Eight in 10 (78%) are “optimistic that it will be a good year overall for Canada” (18% are pessimistic)
  • Just 10% are pessimistic about their own prospects, while only 18% are somewhat or very pessimistic that ‘07 will “be a bad year overall” for the country
  • Merely half, however, (49%) are optimistic about the world in 2007 while nearly half (46%) are pessimistic that it will be a bad year overall for the world
  • People 18 to 34 are the most optimistic about prospects for themselves, the world and their family

The meaning in the data is that whether you’re trying to raise money, organize members or gain votes, be up-beat —like your audience.

Yes, there are daunting challenges, awful conditions and plenty of hardships. But remember to say you’re confident Canadians can defeat misfortune. The public wants to hear you agree with the people that ’07 will be better.

The national phone survey was conducted December 12-14, 2006, with 1,000 adults (aged 18 and over).
